An Overview of Benzodiazepine Abuse

If you or a loved one has suffered from benzodiazepine abuse in Boca Raton, you are probably all too familiar with the symptoms of detox and withdrawal. Still, symptoms are not nearly as painful as those that can mark heroin or alcohol addiction, and the health repercussions of continued benzo addiction are far too serious to ignore.

Benzodiazepines, or tranquilizers, are some of the most commonly prescribed medications in the U.S. today. Familiar benzos include Valium or Xanax. These drugs are often prescribed for anxiety, insomnia, seizure control, and muscle relaxation. Benzodiazepines are also used by detox centers to control symptoms of alcohol withdrawal. The drugs work by acting on the central nervous system to compel sedation and the relaxation of muscles. Because benzos are so widely available, they are also commonly abused and even taken in conjunction with alcohol or other prescription drugs. While death and serious illness are rare, benzo addiction carries serious side effects, including mood changes and chronic fatigue. Chronic drug addiction can lead to weakness, dizziness, difficulty breathing, and even coma.
